Fuel Injection question

This probably has beaten to death here, but, here goes;
I've got the FI that came with the Rover 4.0L, it's the GEMS system. Can I just get the 14CUX computer or do I need to buy the harness also?
Thanks,
Tim

Hey Tim,
The 14CUX computer won't run the GEMS system.
The GEMS is a distributor-less setup and the 14CUX uses a conventional distributor.
You could run the 14CUX computer with it's wiring harness if you convert the engine over to a distributor.
Or you can run the GEMS system if you have the security coding disabled, or run it with the matching BECM (severely complicated but it does let you do some pretty cool stuff with the rest of the car).
There are a few companies that have plug and play programmable ECU's for the GEMS system.
You could also run a stand alone distributor-less ignition system and use the 14CUX with that.
I guess it depends on how much money you want to spend and how complex that the setup becomes.
Cheers
Fred

Thanks Fred,
I've already consulted the two LR specialists around here and they don't have any idea how to disable the security settings on the GEMS. Matter of fact, I bought a bunch of parts from a late model LR with low miles that the owner had to everyone around because something went wonky on his security setting and the car never ran after that. He finally parted it out. Probably made more money anyhow. He was asking $2500 for the engine!

What companies have a plug and play for the GEMS? I was thinking of using MegaSquirt but the learning curve is very steep, I'm more mechanically-minded than tech-minded.
Thanks,
Tim

I've found a company in the UK that sells unlocked ECUs for GEMS and they call them plug and play. Reasonable prices, too. Any thoughts?

If I go this route I'll still need to address the trigger wheel issue.

Tim,
FYI,
You can buy a trigger wheel made for Rover by www. Megasquirt-V8.co.uk
They have them for all the different types of Rover V8 engines. Also available are the different sensors.
