I'm a fan of retrofitting the 4 pin HEI to work with other magnetic breaker distributors. Delco Marine made a 8 pin module that looks identical to the computer controlled car module. The difference is it has built in 22 degree advance and 6000RPM rev limiter. It's called the Delco Marine Voyager EST. I would mount it outside the distributor like my 4 pin setup. For a locked down computer controlled distributor(like TBI small GM V6,Cadillac 4.5/4.9,Nissan V6 and others you wouldn't need the computer. With a older vacuum advance distributor you would throw away the weights and springs and use adjustable advance can(no more than 10 advance). The built in advance starts with 11 degrees at 700RPM and has 22 degrees at 2800RPM. There is a simple jumper setting to set initial(usually 8 or 10) or most just set total timing at 3000RPM for 30 for 8 initial or 32 for 10. It looks like a typical high performance curve with a little more advance off idle. Shop around for best price I've seen them as low as $40 and as high as $100.
