Ford 302 Engine Angle
Posted by: jbarila

Has anyone measured the angle a 302 ends up at? I know the engine should angle down front to back but i can't seem to get it right.
Thanks,
JB

do you have the intake manifold on it? If so you want it set up so it's level front/back & side to side on the carb flange. Not sure how you'd do it if you don't have the intake on it.

Just verified my engine angle of 3-1/2 degrees tail down, using the chrome strip as zero reference. I'll think you'll find that 3 or 4 degrees for an MGB 302 engine power angle is considered about normal but if you have 2 or 5 that is also OK,
Rob's post suggested that the intake/carb interface should be essentially level...that may be ideal but not always achievable - ie. my Edelbrock Performer has a carb mounting surface of about 7 degrees vs zero which means I would have to have a 7 degree engine power angle to be level....that simply will not work!. The result is that my carb is angled 3-1/2 degrees tail up but that really doesn't seem to affect performance.
Instal your engine/xsmn where it wants to go, set the rear axle pinion angle accordingly and you'll be OK.

Graham,
I too am using a performer intake. The 3.5 deg tail up will actually help the air cleaner follow the slope of the bonnet.
Thanks to all. This weekend is final engine mount weld in I hope.

I'm at about 2 degrees tail down.

As far as I am aware the critical angle is to maintain is 0deg between trans out and diff in. Never found out why except some vague reference to u-joint wear.

RE: "the critical angle is to maintain is 0deg between trans out and diff in"

Not exactly...... Ideally, trans out and diff in should be parallel but they cannot be concentric - there should be a minimum 1 degree joint angle to allow the bearings to work. (a zero degree joint angle will lead to premature failure).
