I dug this flywheel out of my basement last week. I thought it might be from a '62 Olds 215 or a Buick 215.
Now I'm not sure what it is? The diameter (not including the ring gear) is 12-7/16". Why is the surface 'dished"?
The measurement between the bolts seen in the lower pic is 9-1/8". Can anyone help?

Thanks,
Martyn

Might be the D&D flywheel for the 300 crank in 215? The flange on the 300 crank is further back. Some have used a 6 cyl Chevy Nova flywheel also.

That is the flywheel for the Olds automatic transmission that was used behind the 61-63 215 V8s............

It is cast iron and too thin/weak, to use as a frictional surface/ BEWARE ! roverman.

Oh, OK.....it's for an automatic transmission. That makes sense, I have a few '62 Olds engine pieces kicking around!

Thanks!

The reason why that flywheel is dished is because the Olds Rotohydramatic 5 automatic does not use a conventional torque converter. There is a fluid coupling buried in the middle of the trans. The bellhousing end simply has a splined input shaft, similar to that of a manual trans. There is a small spring-loaded hub that bolts to those six bolts in the dish of the flywheel. This hub actually looks like the center of a manual trans clutch disk.

I always wondered about that.

Is there anything Joe doesn't know?

What I want to know is this:
How many cases of beer are required to enroll in the Joe-Pa apprenticeship program?

"Is there anything Joe doesn't know?"

Ask my ex-wives about that - you'll get an earful.
