79-80 Rover 3.5 V8 starter

Hi to you all,
My first posting, re: Rover 3.5 V8 starter, has been giving me grief lately. Purchased new (Ebay) to replace with, but gear end different than in car now. I am not the original builder, origin of build unkown at this time, (maybe spent time in Atlanta,GA due to old movie ticket stub found in car). Purchased in San Diego, CA, seller took it in trade on private debt exchange.
Starter on top is Ebay purchase, ( TR8, Morgan V8, Rover V8 in description)
Starter on bottom in car now.
Any info would be appreciated, re: identifying/replacing/rebuilding?
Car pics forthcoming.
Thanks, Mike P in No. CA.

Hi Mike,

Have you tried to fit the new starter into the car? It looks like it's the proper one.
The bottom one is a generic gear reduction starter which is made from a Japanese ND starter with a fabricated adapter.
That's why they look different.
Rebuilding your old one should be a walk in the park for any auto electric shop.

Live like you mean it
Fred

Thans Fred,
Yes, I attempted to install New starter, would not go all the way in, ("that's what she said"), re-installed original. Am currently looking for reputable/reliable rebuilder. Don't want to lay up the car for too long.
It seemed as if the additional metal supporting the drive gear is interferring, goes about 1/2 way or less.
Still looking for the answer..........

What trans/bell housing do you have in the car?

@DiDueColpi,
Was told that motor/engine came from an SD1 sedan.........5 speed.......everything else is stock B, except exhaust. Tires are now 205x15 at all 4 corners.

Nice looking car Mike!

I had a look at the parts pictures ( cause I work best with crayons) and found the starter that you bought fits the land rover v8.
The only difference that I can see is that the solenoid is clocked differently. On the Rover it sticks out to the side and on the SD1 it sits straight down. Possibly there is a flywheel difference but I've never tried it so I don't know.
If I can find out anything more I'll let you know. But more than likely someone here will have the answer.

Cheers
Fred

PS don't let the lovely Lynne know that I said those three words. " I don't know."
