Leaking T5
I'm pretty sure I know what I gotta do but before I pull the motor and all I figured I'd ping this off you guys. My T5 leaks after driving around for a while. For instance, if I go driving for at least 15 minutes then come back and park it in the garage there will be a decent sized puddle of transmission oil under it and the longer I'm out driving the bigger the puddle. Just firing it up and driving around the block might yield a drop but that's it. The leak is toward the front but I do seem to get some drops along the length of it.
I have the RAM HTOB and I think that the seal between the new nose piece and the front of the transmission is my problem. I was telling my dad about this and he really thinks I'm just running too much oil, he used to run an F-production MG midget for years and says he used to have the same problem until he started only using 1 quart. It's been a while since I filled it so I can't quite remember how much I put in it but my best recollection is a few quarts...maybe 3. Anybody got any thoughts? |

Ivan, cked my notes and the Ford T-5 uses 2.5 qts or 80 ozs. The Gm T-5 (tilted 15 degrees) would use similar, but there were problems due to the tilt and later suggestion were to overfille due to the fill hole being over to side 15 degrees. If you have a Ford T-5, the 2.5 qts. will be good. The GM, I think you removed the shifter and added some extra. Maybe 3 qts. Carl Floyd should have a knowledge base on the GM. Maybe drain and catch the fluid and measure 2.5 qts and refill, see if that helps.

Thanks, yea sorry I should have mentioned my setup. It's the Ford T5. I had to fill it through the shifter due to space constraints. I'll give that a shot. Any idea how much to expect will be residual. I know the last time I filled it I had just rebuilt it, I replaced some seals, the cluster, and the input shaft so I know it was bone dry when I filled it.

If you are using ATF, I would think after 10-15 min, very littte of old fluid would remain if reasonably level. Just pull the drainplug and then later add the 2.5 qts of approved ATF. If leak still persists, look elsewhere.

I have a brand new Ford T5Z sitting on my bench. It has a tag stating "NO OIL Add 3 qts. of Mercon or Dexron 3". I think the OP is on the right track. The issue is at the front bearing retainer.

Yea I think its leaning that way. It's leaked so much that I doubt its anywhere near the original 3 quarts anyways, let alone 2.5.

I had a T5 that leaked like that..it had been rebuilt improperly and one shaft was put in backwards as I recall...the rebuilder put things properly and never had the problem again..
