Smiths Temperature Gauge and Rover EFI
I am running a 1978 MGB with a Meqasquirt-n-spark 3.5L. This is building off of Curtis' excellent piece here: [forum.britishv8.org]
I intend to use my original '78 MGB Smiths gauges with the 1/8" x 27MPT temperature sensor port in the Rover EFI intake. My goal is to therefore mimick the original resistance of the Lucas sending unit, but fit within the confines of Rover's threaded intake hole. The original Lucas sending unit operates on this resistance scale (taken from [www.mgexp.com]): 33 F 1850 ohm 50 1600 60 810 90 500 105 380 125 265 140 180 165 118 170 111 185 83 190 74 200 66 204 60 208 55 210 54 To anyone in a similar position, it appears that the following sender will work with the Smiths gauges AND the Rover EFI intake: [www.napaonline.com] ECH TS6723 Temp Sender Switch Temp Rating : 450ohm At 100 Deg F, 46.6ohm At 220 Deg Temperature Switch Thread Size : 1/8" x 27 MPT Of course, if anybody has information that can help clarify it is greatly appreciated. I have ordered mine and will report on how it functions within the MG. Thanks, and happy motoring! |

Re: Smiths Temperature Gauge and Rover EFI
I always had the best luck using the matching sender originally designed for the gage and adapting the threads to the intake. There are thread adapters out there that go from British Standard pipe thread to NPT, and in some cases the threads are close enough you can get by with a good anaerobic sealant. Of course on my car I use the old dual gage which is mechanical.
