Electronic Ignition conversions

Anyone have any experience with the electronic ignition conversion kits?
Namely: PerTronix, Accel and Crane Cams. for 70s point distributor V8s.
Tried doing a search but nothing came up.
Thanks,
Dan

Check out Advanced Distributors. I have the stock Lucas distributor in my 3.5 L Rover with Pertronix, rebuilt and recurved by Jeff. Works great, no issues in 7 years.

I used a Pertronix Ignitor module inside a rebuilt and recurved Delco Remy (Buick 215) distributor with no problems at all for five or six years before converting to a distributorless electronic ignition system. These are a fairy simple and well proven way to eliminate a wear item. On the other hand, the Pertronix Ignitor only fixes one part of the problem. I'm no fan of caps and rotors, vacuum and centrifugal advance mechanisms, etc., etc.

EDIS is a great solution when used with either the Megasquirt EFI controller or the MegaJolt spark controller. See the Roadmaster thread for the MJ/EDIS conversion. EDIS kits are on ebay for about $100 complete.

For simplicity and ease of installation the Pertronix is hard to beat.
When used with the right coil they are dead reliable.
Having said that, if you throw the old points and condenser in the glove box.
You can return the system back to normal in just a few minutes if it does breakdown.
Most other systems are far more complex with remote modules, pickups and the associated wiring.
And they offer no easy way out if they fail.
You do get a potentially hotter spark with the other systems but on a carb'd street motor you will never feel the difference.
The only problem, as Curtis pointed out, is the rest of the 40 odd year old system.
If you want to step up your game and have complete control of your ignition system then Jim's EDIS is a very good alternative to the distributor.
It's installation and programming are a little more advanced. But if you're comfortable doing it it's definitely worth the effort.

Cheers
Fred

I use a Scorcher dissy made by Performance Ignitions in Melbourne specially for Rover and P76 V8s. Uses a Ford body and all readily available Bosch internals cap and rotor. Comes with custom curve to suit your engine spec. Fit and forget.

I have one on a P76 I am about to rebuild Rob, it is in fact a Holden WB distributor(ford dizzys rotate the wrong way. ) .What I see is interesting is the vacuum advance has a blocking plug. I have no idea who built the engine originally and haven't accessed the cam yet to see what the over lap ,negating the use of a vacuum timing mechanism .

As far as electronic distributors go the 123 is a true computerized system. One for sale on EBay as we speak.

Crane cam's XR 3000 infrared triggering system with LX 91 "E" coil replacing the points only keeping the vacuum and mechanical advance units allowing altering both to what the engine needs. Trouble free 200K miles the past 26+ years in a Ford FE stroker engine F250. Yeah I know crank trigger systems, why change something that's working perfectly that replaced points?. ......~~=o&o>......
