carburetor recommendations for 4.6L Rover V8

Used to have a Holley 390 on a 3.5L. Installing a 4.6L from Range Rover HSE, considering Edelbrock Performer vs. Thunder. Any experience with either of these carburetors, particularly the Thunder - any benefit to it over the Performer? And best CFM? Calculator tells me 500 cfm and that seems to be what most go for.

Thoughts Performer vs. Thunder and CFM? Many thanks!!

I like the Performer intake but there is one mod that should be done to it. Drill a 1/4" hole on each side in the thermostat hole. The Buick and Offy intakes have them to prevent hot spots and equalize cooling.

They still make carburetors?

I know it's not really what you asked, but at the moment my favorite "carburetor" is the Atomic EFI, TBI.

Somewhat pricier than the one I bought. :(

However, I am intrigued by the new(er) one from FiTech.

[fitechefi.com]

"Not everybody needs or has 600HP or a wild camshaft."

They mention an engine range of a "ZZ4 crate engine" (350 CI / 5.7L Chevy somewhere between 330 and 350 HP as I recall) and "their '66 Mustang's factory engine" (likely the 289 CI / 4.8L, but maybe the 200 CI / 3.3L?) so it's possible for your 4.6L. ;)

Let us know whichever way you go. :)

Go to your room, Don.

Why not use an EFI Throttle Body? I saw a program on Spike Tv last Sat morning where they swapped one and installed it in twenty minutes including computer tuning!

Many thanks fellas I'll take a look at all those links and do a bit of reading. Got a few days to make a decision.

Quadrajet is a pretty good carb if it is set up right. Or so I hear. Dinosaur parts for dinosaur juice, right?

Tim:
In my experience, nothing ever goes like it does on those TV car shows. If the car on Spike TV previously had a carb, they would have had to install a new fuel pump, lines and wiring........not a twenty minute job. When I do something on my car, the first twenty minutes is spent looking for the right tools and scratching my head, and sometimes other parts. :-)

Been looking at the Quick Fuel 450, Jim N. Very interesting.

For my use (autox & track days), I would likely pick the HR450 with dual fuel inlets & mechanical secondaries. Now, if they just had a mechanical choke option. :)

Carl, There are inexpensive manual choke conversion kits for Holley's that would probably work. The TBI conversions are around $1000 and the Quick Fuel 450 is $325. Plus you need all the extra sensors, fuel pump, etc. For those that just want a better carb instead of going to EFI, the Quick Fuel is a bargain. The one Carl likes is a bit more. There is a thread on the Mgexperience site on a simple adapter for the stock Buick intake. For bigger motors like the 300 Buick or 302 Ford I would look at the Summit 600 carb.

Hello Phil. I was just kidding because Mickey said Go to your room so I jumped in for fun . I should have said LOL at the end .. We were just down in Watkins Glen last weekend to see the Vintage Races there. If you ever get a chance to go,,,it's like going to Heaven. You can walk through the pits and talk to people and they love to talk to you cuase you are on the same wavelength.. Saw every kind of car you could imagine and a symphony of sound going on all day Friday to Sunday. Just had to mention that . Still thinking about it.Hoping I'm not going on to much but we stayed south of Watkins Glen at Elmira NY and found that Marc Twain was buried there because he had a summer place there. Sunday morning we went to the cemetary to see his gravestone and met thecustodian. He took us to the grave sight which was humbling and said he knew where his summer residence was also. He said follow me and you can find that too. The cottage was up a very steep hill so he left us at the bottom. He had mentioned about going to races on Sunday so we gave him our weekend tickets to get in .What a great favour for favour.Hope the side story isn't too boring but if you can ever get for the races it is Aces

No worries Tim
I haven't been to Watkins Glen but have been to Virginia Int'l raceway for their premier vintage races. A great time much like you describe at Watkins Glen. I expect that the Mark Twain/Samuel Clemens connection was a nice surprise for you too. Just finished reading The $30,000 Bequest and other short stories. I spent a day in Virginia City, NV several years ago where he was the editor of the local paper for some time and spent a lot of time in a saloon a few doors down called the Bucket of Blood. It's still there and I had to go in and have a beer. Didn't see Mark Twain though. :-)

I've got an Edelbrock 1404 on my 4.6 with Performer inlet and 300 heads. Pretty happy with the way it goes and sounds awesome.
