pinning liners

Been doing lots of reading on the subject and I think I'm going to give it a go. I have a spare 4.0 block that has 2 cylinders out of round. Since off the shelf oversized pistons aren't available cheap like they are for the 4.6, to me this is basically a throw away block. Thinking about pinning them and then boring out to accommodate Chevy 305 pistons or something similar and see what happens. Have a good 4.0 crank and a good spare 300 crank but no 4.6 ones floating around. Might have to get creative on final combination, but for now, just some experimenting. Has anybody here pinned their liners instead of going top hat? Best price I can find around here for top hats is roughly $1700. Not about to spend that on a 4.0. Not when Chevy LS engines just keep getting cheaper.

The late blocks tend to develop a crack behind the liner, Todd. Only fix is the expensive top hat liner route. I would just use it & cross my fingers. After having it sonic tested, first.

Just got my 4.6 back today. Neither the 4.6 nor the 4.0 had slipped liners or ever overheated as far as I could tell. They both had a couple of ovaled cylinders. The 4.6 got new pistons and an overbore. Keeping stock compression and adding a mild cam, headers, and a 4 barrel. Just going to cross my fingers and hope for the best. Its going into a mild TR8 coupe, and I'm hoping for 260 HP. Both engines were immaculate when I cracked them open. Both were running engines when the Rovers they were in were wrecked, so I'm hopeful there are no cracks behind the liners... yet. The 4.6 will sit here bagged. Its for the next project anyway. Still need to finish the TR8 coupe with the 500hp LS3. So much fabrication work and very little spare time to get it done.
