ZF transmissions bellhousing interchange
Anybody familiar with ZF transmissions?
I have a ZF 4HP22 that was attached to a Rover 4.0. The bellhousing is removable. I was just curious to know if other ZF transmissions would fit up to that bellhousing. |

Re: ZF transmissions bellhousing interchange
The only trans that will fit that bell housing are the 4HP22 and 4HP24 Paul.
The bell housing for the 22 is smaller due to a smaller diameter torque converter. The 24 is a stronger trans rated @ 330ftlbs torque while the 22 is 260 ftlbs. The 24 however is an electronic trans so you would need to provide a method of control for it. Or just swap out the 24 internals into a 22 case. Mods are available to gain more strength if needed, thanks to the BMW crowd. While the ZF in the landrover was a 4WD configuration, it was also used in Austin, BMW, Jaguar, Lincoln, Mercedes, Volvo, Peugeot and some Chevy imports as a rear wheel drive trans. Hope that's helpfull. Cheers Fred |

Thanks, Fred, very helpful.
I saw that ZF made 5 and 6 speed transmissions, but the trans-to-bellhousing bolt patterns look different. If I use my ZF 4HP22, I'll probably get the output shaft and tailhousing from a 2WD tranny like the Volvo and swap it over. |
