Bump for Dave. How's the project coming?

Slowly but surely.

My block is at the machine shop along with the Toyota pistons and Melling sleeves. I need to check on progress.

In my research of all top hat liner options for the RV8, I learned that the Melling liner for the GM modular engines that Fred found are actually very slightly smaller OD than the “oversized” liner from Turner Engineering in the UK. As many have noted, either one is a metaphorical Dixie cup. The Toyota pistons are a bit smaller diameter than Chevy 305s, so I should have a bit of sleeve meat left.

The block may be (will be) a bit delicate, so I decided I would not go for max HP effort. That made the limitations of cast pistons (not forged) and 300 heads (not TA heads) easier to accept.

I just got my 300 heads back from Jon Carls Engineering, with oversized Ferrea valves, hardened seats, and Z28 springs. I may have over-invested in the heads (was about $1300 labor plus parts and shipping), but I’ve read in several places that the best performance investment in the BOPRV8 is the heads, so hopefully not.

My oil pump and front cover remains an open question. I really want the crank-driven oil pump, which puts me into fabrication territory (either mod the cover or the MG steering rack)

My other open question is the cam. I’ve watched the “B Cam” video at least six times, but still haven’t found inspiration.

With about 4.75L displacement, ported 300 heads, a Buick 215 4bbl intake, and coated headers with 1.5” primaries, what sort of “fast road” cam should I look for? The valve springs limit to a 6000 rpm redline, with .500 lift. The cast pistons might drop the redline closer to 5500. The block sleeves might limit the redline by another 4000. :)

I welcome any ideas or opinions relating to cam choices?

Dave, I usually recommend Crower cams but after Bruce Crower passed away their prices have gone up almost double. I'd call Woody and ask about his Erson cams. Are you using a carb or newer TBI? Holley makes a 465cfm 4 barrel for a 289 that would be good or Summit has their 500cfm. Just something different than the usual Edelbrock. Quick Fuel has a nice 450cfm for a little more money. Have you looked at the bottom half 3800 for crank driven oil pump/top half 3.8 Buick with distributor idea.

Don, is that the Interim cover or John Eale's? Looks like you have block hugger headers with hot air escape holes? Dave, what compression did you end up with, and was your valve size 1.74 intake, 1.5 exhaust?

That is the rover interim cover with gerotor oil pump. Terrry at autosport in Ballard did the machine work and assembly. Crower cam, 10lb. flywheel. port matched heads, balanced, 4.6 liter, 215 Buick intake, distributor modified by Jeff, ford t5 2.95 with d&d bell and adapter. Hope to get it to abfm in Kirkland next year
