Olds 215 head gaskets-options?
Posted by: chevsen

I am building an Olds 215 that I have had sitting in storage for 30+ years (hey...I've been busy) and am wondering if steel shim gaskets are available anywhere? I have the Felpro composites from a gasket set that I bought in the late '80s but these look like they will compress to .045" or so, which is less than ideal for this build. Has anyone modified Buick/Rover steel shim gaskets to fit an Olds block with success? TIA

.045" = too thin, as-in, less than ideal ? Studs or bolts ? Art.

.045" as in too thick, Art. Ideal would be the original style that compress to .015"-.020". Should still be available.

I used the .015" gaskets in my 215 Olds with 15 lbs boost and they held up.

Jim,
I missed getting a ride in that 15 lb. beast, back in the day. I bet you spanked a lot of high-dollar, snobs ?

It was pretty quick back in the day. Today, probably not as much

I sent cometic an old shim gasket and had them make me two new ones at .016. Now that they have the templet they should be able to make you any style( that they make) in any thickness you need.

I love Cometic, but I sent them and old copper gasket for an Alvis that we are restoring and I think they have parked on it.
I'm not going to try to stir up any controversy but as a Canadian company doing business with US firms has become exceedingly difficult. Companies that I have dealt with for thirty years suddenly can't ship to Canada or won't accept Canadian payments.
Recently we dropped a California company that we do roughly $50,000 us a year with. They couldn't supply parts faster than a three month timeline and demanded payment up front. Returns on wrong or defective parts are outright denied. So we have now switched to an Egyptian firm that gets stuff to me in two days! The Cometic style gasket arrived in six days from Thailand. And its flawless.
I,m sorry for this little rant but man! the frustration level is getting high.

And yet, Fred, "We are fifth largest economy, in the world" ! If you believe this, I have some hurricane-proof land in Florida,
for you ? I live like I mean it, in the second poorest county, in US and yet, in So. Cal., go figure ?
Cheers, Art.
