Good oil catch can location? Stroked 215 V8
After running a 3/4” breather hose to my air cleaner housing from the mechanical fuel pump block off plate, I now have oil laying in my air cleaner base. I have a PCV valve on the right side valve cover to the intake plenum. This arrangement seemed to solve my oil leaking everywhere problem. So, now I’m going to install a oil catch can inline on the 3/4” breather hose. I’m wondering if anyone else here has had this issue. It seems to be a common issue in general with these older modified V8’s. Prior to this setup I tried a DPR valve setup and that didn’t seem to work to vent enough blow by and I still had oil leaking everywhere.
I can say that after the vent was installed on the block off plate, the engine stopped forcing oil out of various seals. Unfortunately the suction on the vent line is pulling oil into the air filter housing. If anyone has dealt with this particular scenario, let me know how you dealt with it and if you use a catch can, where did you mount it. 1974.5 MGBGT V8, 1962 Olds stroked 215 , now 266 ci., Edelbrock 500 CFM carb. |

I'd suggest you first try stuffing a stainless steel scrubber pad down your vent hose and see if that collects the oil and lets it drain back to the crankcase.

Thanks for the input. I’ve got the catch can installed and it has steel wool inside to help keep the oil from getting sucked out. I will report the results. Fingers crossed.

I found a good location close to the fuel pump block off plate. I got a new plate with a 12 an elbow fitting that works great. We took it for a 10 mile spirited drive and we’re not seeing any oil in the air filter base or anywhere else. So, for now it looks like a win. For some reason no matter how I orient the photo it will only post it clocked incorrectly. What’s up with that?

There's an awful lot of oil mist in the crankcase.
Perhaps that's why Rover vented from the rocker box. Vent has a Brillo pad (flame trap) in the base then goes straight into the carbs. ![]() I sort of replicated that arrangement when I went to a 4-barrel, hose to the bottom of the air filter. No oil in there. I think you're making a rod for your own back, venting off the crankcase. Ivor |

Not much in the timing cover, Ivor. My catch can pictured above rarely has any oil at all in it.

I’d rather vent from the valve cover but I cant find a cap that has a vent tube that will fit onto my original style valve covers. I could probably make something up to work. I’ve read a few posts here that mentioned the fuel pump block off plate, so I’m trying it out. First run shows no oil leaks and the air filter base is dry. The catch can dip stick isn’t showing any oil yet so we’ll run it and check it after each drive. I’ll update here if it has issues.
