Chevy 302 Trans Am Engine.

Is anyone familiar with these engines as used in the original Trans Am series back in the late 60's early 70's, are they rare or did chevrolet build large numbers for homologation?

The reason I'm asking is that someone here in the UK has one with all the correct casting numbers apart from the inlet manifold and want's to know what it's worth.

With the Trans Am series revived for historic racing i was thinking it might have some decent value although I have seen one on US e-bay with a start price of $5500 and no bidders, but could be the wrong place to advertise it.

Kevin.

They are pretty rare, only put in Z/28s. 327 block with a 283 crank. Great high-revving motor. If you could re-unite the original block and car, you'd probably get tons of money. Otherwise, I'm not so sure.

I believe the first year.. was the 283 (small journal) crank in the 327 block. The subsequent years were a large journal crank.. same bore and stroke though..... The real worth is to someone restoring a Z/28.. thats about it.. If the serial number has been ground off they are worth about nothing more than a 4 bolt truck block...
Anyone doing any serious racing would probably buy a Dart block since the metallurgy and oiling systems are vastly superior.

You need to start with some basics of the casting numbers. Many of the engines were abused from day one so GM produced warrenty/replacement blocks that are not vehicle specific but are date specific. Additionally early 1967 DZ 302s were rare, 602 and same with 1968 with 7,199, but in 1969 GM produced 20,302 Z28 camaros. Try this group out; camaro@camaro-registry.com. You never know someone could have the car and has been looking for the matching engine all these years if there is a vin on the block!
