Started up my electric power steering with problems(Solved)!

I just got done installing all the parts from a Saturn Vue into my Triumph TR6 column. After hooking up the bruno controller and dial control (per instructions), went to test out the electric steering.

I turned on the ignition switch to the ignition position, after a few seconds the steering wheel very quickly went back a forth left to right. I grabbed onto the steering wheel to help stop the violent shaking back and forth. Then the steering wheel turned all the way into a right hand turn position and then went to the left position. I was holding onto the steering wheel the whole time to slow it down, it was hard to hold onto the steering wheel. I thought you had to turn the wheel and it would help to assist to the steering, not turn the wheel for you.

Has anyone else have this problem?

Kind of scary if I was out on the road and this happened while driving. I must have a bad controller or dial part?

Calvin, it sounds like it's driving in the wrong direction. Probably the motor ans sensor are out of phase. Hydraulic systems will do this too if the wrong spool is installed.

Hi Calvin,
I've never had one react that way.
It's a huge disappointment to have that happen after all that work.
The Bruno box isn't capable of causing that type of problem.
It would have to be an internal issue in the EPS unit.
I would suspect that the torque sensor is damaged.
Was the control box remote mounted?
Do you have any pics of the install?

I have been emailing Bruno with the issue. I did move the ECU under the dash maybe 12 inches away. I made an aluminum bracket to mount it on and used thermal paste for heat. I cut the shaft on the steering wheel side so that 1 inch of spline was left. Maybe some shavings got into the sensors. I have two other Saturn Vue steering setup that I pulled from other cars. I took off the cover from one of the other ECU boxes and found there is a VR1,VR2,VR3 adjustment screws on the ECU. I believe the VR1 will adjust how much power steering to left to right softness setting from reading on the net. I wonder what 2 and 3 will do?

I will take some photos of the installation later and post. I'm glad I pulled two other systems!!

Here is an email Bruno sent me for relocating ECU instructions others can go by.

[mail.google.com]

Bruno said to not adjust VR2 or VR3 on ECU the power steering will not work anymore.

A photo to check a see if my camera phone has a low enough setting to post photos on here.

Check the wiring to the ECU Calvin.
It's reacting exactly the way you would expect if the torque sensor wires were reversed.

Fixed It and Fred you were right. It was a learning time for me on this wiring. Being color blind may have had a little to do with it (nope), just the wires were reversed even after I marked them, to and from the ECU, and before cutting them. Live and learn for myself and others.

Now I need another support bearing at the firewall. To much movement for me. The extra movement is caused by, having a u-joint inside the firewall on the PS shaft, and having no way to support the shaft going through the firewall in a bushing.

I don't know about being color blind Calvin.
You picked a fantastic color for your car!

Cheers
Fred

Glad you got it Calvin. I had that happen with a hydraulic unit once, nearly took my arm off.

"Yeah Jim", that steering unit has some serious power for sure hooked up in the reversed way.

"Funny you would say that Fred" Brenda picked the color and I sprayed it on!!!
