MGC axle

I have been offered a wire wheel MGC axle with a 3.3 ratio diff, please can anyone tell me the problems I might have in using it in my MGB with a V6. My top gear ratio is 0.84 which will give me about 27 mph/ 1000 rpm which will be perfect for me. The problem is the axle width, I know wire wheel axles are not as wide and that I can machine off the splines (5 stud wheels) close to the hub and fit an adapter to move the wheels out but will this put undue load on the axle bearings? I anticipate the spacer being +3/4" + 1" for a wider wheel so call it 2" each side
