Steering Rack question
Posted by: 63BlueMGB

Hello all!

I recently rebuilt my steering shaft, it is a 1963 MGB Steering rack, However when I rebuilt it I put everything back together as it was when I disassembled it. But now with a rebuilt rack and new tie rods, the left hand wheel points out when the right one is straight. What could I have done to cause this? Or is this just normal after replace the tie rods.....Pictures to follow to give you an idea. Any help is always appreciated

Make sure all your old and new parts were the same length?

Is it as simple as adjusting the tie rods (as would be done to set toe)

All parts are the same except for the tie-rods, However I could not say if tie rods were the same length, I just assumed they were and threaded them on the same number of turns I threaded then off with. I could probably adjust tie rods to make it work, but if I did both rods would be adjusted all the way in, and that just doesnt seem right. I was thinging I did not set my steeering column correctly to align with the teeth of the steering rack but that doest seem right either? still looking for answers

nick all that is adjusting the toe , I will bet that tie rod was made a little bit different. the rack did not grow on that side so just adjust it and i'll bet you will be ok

Some replacement tie rods ends are longer than the original, hence Jim's suggestion to compare new & old parts. On the MG T-Series, sometimes the rod must actually be cut shorter.
