Machining Wire Wheel Hubs

Is there any reason(s) why a set of wire wheel knock-off hubs could not be lathe cut (to remove the splined section) and reused to mount disk style wheels?
Of course there's the shorter rear axle/spacing issue which could be resolved with spacers and longer studs...but any fitment issues with the hubs themselves?

Easily done and popular for redrilling to 5 lug (5x 4.5") as the hubs are flat on back instead of tapered like the steel wheel hubs.
