Jim, I can somewhat envision the function using a cam disc and follower. You can design in a channel that the follower would only drop into if the cam rotated in a reverse direction. Then when driven forward it would drive out of that channel and begin to follow the main channel as long as the motor turned in that direction. You could almost build such a system into a standard Lucas wiper drive motor with a custom disc but space limitations in the gear box might be a problem as the diameter would almost have to be larger than original.

Unless the moldings are below the trailing edge of the hood, yes, they would. It would take some type of cowl induction style hood for the wipers to be out of sight with the bent-arm wiper idea.
