Top frame repair

Here's a repair on the folding top frame for my Midget that I did this weekend. This is my second frame to repair and both broke in identical locations. Most top frames are similar so this should help on other type LBCs as well. Text with each photo describes the process. [www.flickr.com]

That's pretty good Bill. I especially liked the part about re-using the old rivet. When I repaired my top I gas welded both sides of the broken piece rather than welding it solid and re-drilling but I think your method might be a little closer to original appearance.

Jim, I reused the old rivet because the diameter is sort of unusual and I couldn't find a good replacement. If you build up a little weld dome then it's almost undetectable from original. I like to weld up the whole area and redrill the hole to make sure that there is good penetration of the weld and that the hole is exactly the size needed without slop. I do like gas or TIG welding as they seem to be a little less brittle than MIG, but either will work.
