Photos of Ian Metcalf's ZA Magnette race car...
...have been uploaded to our "Project Journal" section.
Ian, please accept a very warm welcome to BritishV8! It's a very interesting and unusual project, and definitely worth a look! Click here to check it out. (43 photos so far!) Believe it or not, this is a "Before" picture: And this is where Ian's extensive rebuild stands at the moment: Shocking, eh? I'm curious to hear everyone's reaction. This is the place for that. I'll start: the "before" picture reminds me of a Checker cab on steroids, which is a look I rather like actually, but I'm very confident I'll like the "after" picture much better. I can't wait to see this one come together. Crazy! |

Great work Ian! The doors was a great idea & the frame/sill work was cleaver too. Keep posting updates.

Re: Photos of Ian Metcalf's ZA Magnette race car...
Thank you for the warm welcome guys, it's appreciated.
I've got a lot more typing and pictures to upload yet as the car is actually at the point of going in to primer, the last picture above was taken about 11 months ago. I'll get some more posted tomorrow. :-) Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 08/22/2009 12:54AM by 427ZA. |

Re: Photos of Ian Metcalf's ZA Magnette race car...
Another update has been added, this time it's the front suspension replacement.
This car had quite a bit of history before I owned it, the original build was in the mid 80's. I've slowly collected pictures of it's history so I thought I'd post a few here... In primer... Then it went green but still up in the air gasser style... It's blue phase saw it a lot closer to the ground... Then it was featured in Street Machine magazine in the UK but this time it was an orange/red mix... Finally it became the yellow beasty as I bought it... Now I've changed the character of it completely, some people approve and others think I should have stayed with the original design as it's part of UK hot rodding history....... |

Re: Photos of Ian Metcalf's ZA Magnette race car...
I've added some more updates but because I've run out of room for photo's in the thread i've started a second one appropriately with the same title but part 2. :)
Mr moderator, I want to post a link at the end of part one to take the reader to part two and a link at the beginning of part two that goes back to part one to keep them tied in together. Is this possible? |

Love the early shots of the car Ian. Do you still have the bonnet that fits with the Magnette grille? I think that looks so good even if it's not the most aerodynamic bit.

Re: Photos of Ian Metcalf's ZA Magnette race car...
Unfortunately I don't, Bill.
I will look at making a fibreglass front from an original Magnette front end once the car is built, that way I can have the original grille in place which I would really like. The panels on the donor car were just too far gone to be able to take a mould from but I will succeed even if it means 'borrowing' a set of panels from Shortens. :) The front on it at the moment is ok but there are only three of them in the world, mines the only one with a scoop and the mould has been destroyed. 'I must not break the front' needs to be sign written inside of the car! Thanks for sorting the links Curtis! |

Re: Photos of Ian Metcalf's ZA Magnette race car...
Ian,
Great progress and nice to see the car actually looking like a Magnette again, albeit with only two doors which I think works reallly well. Keep up the good work and looking forward to seeing it with the paint on. I know there were quite a few people on The V8 Owners Forum interested in seeing progress with the rebuild. It might make your progress easier to follow if you paste a link to the latest work in you last post. Kevin Jackson. |

Re: Photos of Ian Metcalf's ZA Magnette race car...
Hi Kevin,
If this link will work, it takes you to the Part 2 section. [forum.britishv8.org] I'm not sure how to post a link to the latest update though because the updates can only be done in the form of an edit so there isn't a seperate posting for each update I put up. I'll make a note on here when I've updated and where to look in the thread for it. Hopefully that'll work, I'm not very good at this interwebby stuff. Keep reading, I'll put another update in tomorrow. Here's a sneak preview of it in primer. It won't get it's top coat until I've made the alloy panelled interior as that has to be painted as well... Enjoy! Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 09/20/2009 01:54PM by 427ZA. |

Re: Photos of Ian Metcalf's ZA Magnette race car...
The latest update is posted!!
If you scroll down Part 2 I've put a marker date in the edit (30/09/2009) to show where the latest update begins. Enjoy and if you have any comments please feel free to post them on here whether they're good or bad I don't mind, it's all useful to learn from as this is my first ever project like this! |

Re: Photos of Ian Metcalf's ZA Magnette race car...
"Awesome"
Now that's the kind of comments I like, it suggests that the project is moving in the right direction. Feedback is good as this is my first project like this, I've only ever restored Beetles and built one full on race & show beach buggy before this madness. |
