Another Exceptional MG Midget Racecar
Summary: Craig Chima created a commotion at the 2006 SCCA Championship Runoffs with his limited-prep MG Midget. After the 2006 season, Craig decided to remove the SCCA-legal (fiberglass) bodywork and fit Austin Healey Sprite steel fenders. With steel fenders and a few other modest modifications, the car is now legal for use most vintage racing organizations. Chuck Pitt bought the car and is now actively racing with several east coast racing groups... Good job, Chuck! To me, the interesting thing about this exquisitely crafted and well presented car is that Craig's unique limited-prep suspension is still intact (except for rear shock absorbers). If someone had continued campaigning this car in SCCA, the suspension design would probably have been lost to history because for 2007 SCCA rewrote their rules to close loopholes Craig had exploited. I'm pretty certain detailed photos of this suspension have never been published before, anywhere. Check it out!

Hey Curtis,
Pretty neat car. Well executed and cleverly planned. Has it been lenghtened? The front end looks stretched or is it just the camera angle? Cheers Fred |

Re: Another Exceptional MG Midget Racecar
No, it's not stretched but one thing that might make it look extra long is that it's sitting VERY low.
From what I can tell, the best external predictor of who will win a race is who's car is lowest. John Targett's MGB, for example, must be about four inches lower than some of the MGBs he blows away. You'd think they'd notice something different about his car as it slips by below where their side-view mirrors are aimed. (I don't advocate using mirrors. Just saying...) Another thing I like to peek at is where rev-limiters are set. Some of the vintage Spridget driver's set their rev-limiters two thousand RPM below where they need to be to run with the leaders. |

Re: Another Exceptional MG Midget Racecar
What is this " MIRRORS" that you speak of.
If it's not in front of you, it doesn't matter. |
