GT 2 RV 8, Quick Change rear end ?
What if QC rear was allowed ? Stock Car Products used to make one, based on Dana#30 ring/pinion. Light weight, probably strong enough and always the right gear for a particular track. 2cents, roverman.

Re: GT 2 RV 8, Quick Change rear end ?
Art,
I'll look into it. Thanx. Tell me more about the QC rear Dana # 30 ring & pinion you have in mind. The SCCA GCR rules for GT 2 and the RV8 are generally liberal. Anything that is not prohibited in the GCR under GT2 rules is allowable. For instance, the rules repeatedly state that the GT2 car is a "replica" with even a full tube frame allowed. Then you better follow the rules very closely in construction. But, I think any rear axle or rear end is allowed, making a quick change rear end possible. Thanx again. keep them on the track phillip g We plan to look ar all the available parts for the rear axle in Orlando, Florida on the first weekend of December at the huge Auto race car parts show. And we will certainly look for the right parts and costs there |

Re: GT 2 RV 8, Quick Change rear end ?
Phillip, Dana 30 used in lots of mopars, jeeps, etc. 71/4 ring gear. "Maybe" reverse rotation available,( 4 wheel drive)? I'd search "Stock Car Products".Maybe you'll get lucky, or maybe a second choice of alum 8" Ford ? Pair of "Merlins" in your future ? roverman.

Re: GT 2 RV 8, Quick Change rear end ?
Phillip, I'm not sure if your class requires"full floating" axles, if so I suggest a look at Stock Car Products. Features you may like. Since QC's use a "Helical" R&P, frictional losses are close to conventional, and their light. Good Luck, roverman.

Re: GT 2 RV 8, Quick Change rear end ?
Art,
SCCA GT rules are very open or liberal to most modifications - within the original RV8 specs. I think almost ANY rear axle (& brakes!) are allowed. Remember, "replica" is the key word in GT SCCA racing. We are already pretty wild in our mods - as per body work. But it still is a great replica of a RV8. I think we are well within the rules. Now performance mods are needed. keep them on the track phillip g |

Re: GT 2 RV 8, Quick Change rear end ?
Phil and Art, I like the idea of a quick change but on most MGBs the rear fuel tank is so close to the rear axle there's not room for the quick change as most of them extend the gear case several inches rearwards of the original axle case. If your fuel cell is positioned far enough to the rear then you might get it in but would you have room to change the gears? They also would block the mounting of a panhard bar or Watts linkage at the optimum height for a low roll center. I've seen one used on a RX7 that Jessie Prather raced but it was used with a Jacobs ladder similar to what the guys in the sprint cars use. [www.spitzracing.com] Pretty complex but it worked. I don't know what the effect of a Jacobs Ladder is on roll center, can't find that information yet.
I'd think that a Ford 8" with an aluminum gear case would offer ease of gear changes, light weight, and plenty room for suspension components at a reasonable price. |

Re: GT 2 RV 8, Quick Change rear end ,"Winters" is coming.
Since no one has replied about "full floating axles", there are other benefits, weight(live axle even lighter),safety, a "Watts Link" or "pickle fork" possibly mounted on the pinion snout. Two fuel cells ? For myself-only, I like to consider all systems available and then decide, ie. webbsites.Update, "Winters"(midget), on ebay NOW. 8 3/8" ring gear ,3.73/1 rat.,54lbs ! Good Luck, roverman.
