You just gotta get your mind right. When I was a kid, we had a chihuahua dog. That little sweetie thought she was a BIG dog. She was great! She had the right attitude. As long as there were no other dogs around, she really was a big dog.
If you park the Kestral with a bunch of Minis, you'll see it's big and luxurious by comparison. I've been studying the old British car industry for a long time now, and I still don't feel I have a handle on their badge engineering strategy. What "brand values" would you say distinguish a (60s vintage) Riley from a Wolseley, for example? Was a Riley Kestral supposed to be more family friendly whereas a Wolseley 1300 was supposed to be more distinguished, an MG 1300 sedan more sporty, and a Princess Vanden Plas more luxurious? (Same "ADO16" platform but different trim, right?) Of course GM also had too many brands... I've heard GM describe Buicks as "doctors' cars", but I don't think they ever elaborated on whether dentists should instead buy Oldsmobiles or Pontiacs... Riley was marketed to the up-scale micro car buyer, the Riley is very much the same as the Worseley but a bit fancier and a few more manufactured

I have just found this nearly five years since the original posting. In the 1960's BMC consisted of Austin, Morris, MG, Wolsely, Riley and Van den Plas and four different car models came in some or all of these "badge engineered" brands but theywere all different to appeal to different market sectors. In the case of the Austin/Morris 1100 which were identical apart from the badges the other variants differed quite markedly. The Wolsely version had a wooden dash and a twin SU carb engine, the Riley had the same engine, a different wooden dash with circular instruments instead of rectangular and leather upholstery. The MG version had the basic interior but with the twin carb engine and the Van den Plas had a better veneered dash, wood door cappings and picnic tables in the back of the front seats. This version was distinguished externally not only by a different bonnet (hood) but also fog lights placed between the headlights and the grill.
What was ironic was that the range of models and therefore the choice of trim was reduced during the end of the 1960's just as Ford was launching new cars with a wider range of trim options. In Australia they had installed the 1500 engine from the Maxi to give it more power and five gears, there is no doubt that the car would have been a greater success in its later years if a hatchback version had been developed. Although descbibed as a micro car it was as roomy inside as a MK1 Golf. I remember an article in "Motor" magazine (early 1970's) in which Alec Issignossis discussed car ride and handling among BL cars currently in production he provided the results from various cars timed along a slalom course, it would be no surprise to find that the mini was quickest but the 1100 was not far behind, the MGB trailed about 2 seconds slower! |
