exhaust question
I'm looking for suggestions on what exhaust setup to go with.
I have a 67 MGB with Buick 215, custom headers, glasspacks that dump out in front of rear wheels and Jaguar IRS. The old 18" glasspacks are pretty blown out and with the short pipes are pretty loud. I would like to quiet it down some so it does not sound so obnoxious in the neighborhood. I'm planning to run the exhaust under the center of the IRS and bend around the fuel tank and out the back. There will probably only be about 2" road clearance. I want to use a cylinder-shaped muffler, 3-4" max, as they are less like to catch on anything. Also plan to put the muffler ahead of the bends at the IRS, perhaps to allow a something in the 20" range so to be a little quieter.. I've seen cars in the galleries use Flowmaster Hushpower and others use Magna Flow glasspacks. How would the tone on these compare? Are there others I should consider. Thanks for the suggestions. Hope to have this complete by the first part of next week. |

Re: exhaust question
David,
I don't know about the Magna Flow but a few months ago I put a pair of 12" shorty Hushpowers on my 302 TR6. Power yes; hush no. It was LOUD. I had to use earplugs although the sound was a great low throaty tone. Many people complimented me on it. I couldn't take it though so after a few weeks I put on two 18" Dynomax Turbos. Much better. I looked around at other news groups and many people recommended Dynomax for a quite sound. However they are not cylinder shaped. George |

Re: exhaust question
David, since you have IRS, check out the routing on the Roadmaster. Very good system, nice sound.

Re: exhaust question
For what its worth 'cause they're not round, a guy with a 5.0L ford with a bit of cam lope turned into my neighborhood the other day. His exhaust was surprisingly quiet so I asked him what he had - Flowmaster 40's.

Re: exhaust question
I'm Running Borla XS Pro mufflers under my IRS 2 1/2" pipe from header all the way back. I had the Flowmaster 40's on before and had a droan sound and rasp of the ls1 around 2000 rpm range.
So by installing Borla XS Pro straight through, Pace Maker Monza Big Bore glass packed straight through tips, I achieved some low tone free flowing exhaust that I couldn't be more happier with. The sound doesn't have the droan or rasp anymore and when in high gears or cruising. When laying on the throtle you can hear everything come out with some sound. So the end results having best of both worlds. I had a problem getting 2 1/2 ' in and 3" out Monza tips. They wern't making any at the time of order, so had to go with 2 1/2" in and 4" out. The tips made the exhaust pass the wifes ears test. |

Re: exhaust question
Calvin,
That signature raspiness & drone is why I have spoken ill of Flowmaster for so many years. I went from Cherry Bomb header mufflers to Flowmasters on my Camaro many years ago. I do not like 'em at all. The headers mufflers had Tone to the bone! |
