selecting a T5 transmission
Posted by: MG wanna B

I ran across a Borg-Warner T5 5sp from an 89 v6 Camaro. I have sent a message to try to find out the mileage on it, as well as any other information I can get. their asking price is $250. I have asked for their best cash price for it, and it's about 1 1/2 hours away from me. it looks like it is in pretty good shape, and doesn't have the bell housing, nor any of the clutch parts. just the tranny, and shifter.

is it worth the money, or, should I run the other way?

thanks

Ed, The V8 T5 has better ratios for the stock rear. If you get D&D's narrowed S-10 rear with low 3's ratio the V6 gears are fine.

thanks. are there gears that can be put in the stock rear end? I have been talking with mark about a complete kit for 1 of 2 possible cars I want to do. I have a 77 and a 76, but the 76 would be the car that I'm gonna be doing, as it is in the best shape. I hate to, but, it is surely headed that way. the 77 is just parts, complete, but just parts.

There are 3.07 and 3.31 MGC gears(carrier needs machined or use MGC carrier). I think Robert Kirk found some aftermarket 3.07's that bolt up to the MGB carrier. Do a search on Mgexperience site for the thread. Usually used go for around $500, more for new. I think D&D's narrowed S10 was around $1500.

Ed, The main thing with the T5 is there are no stop bolts for the shifter, an aftermarket shifter fixes that. You should shim the front bearing up to .001 end play and use quality lube. I like GM Synchromesh. I know you want D&D to do a kit for you with a 215 or 3.5 Rover but, think about it and later you will want to upgrade to something bigger. I'd go at least 4.0, maybe 4.6 Rover. I've had a few 215's and they are cool little motors but I've had 3.4 and 3.8 V6's also and they are about the same power. Just something to think about, the engine pretty much looks the same.

thanks,

i'l keep that in mind.

what if I did a 302, with a mustang 5.0 T5. I'm finding them locally, too.

my big thing is that I don't want to cut the fender wells.

I found the Mustang V8 T5's much more plentiful than the GM V8 T5's. Also, it looks like the metal tag has been removed that identifies the specific model/year of car your tranny was in. I believe the number starts with a 1352... Good luck with your search.

Brad

you're right, it is a 1352 197, which is a v6 "WC" tranny. I have the price down, and he is throwing in a bell housing. I still plan to get it, but will most likely resell it. had to wait, due to batteries dying in 2 trucks today, and new car trailer tires, so it will have to wait a bit.
